Attacks by the Tamil Tigers

There were various attacks carried out by the Tamil tigers in its aim to have an independent Tamil state and here are some of the significant attacks:

Suicide air raid on Colombo on 20 February 2009

This suicide air raid was launched by the LTTE air-wing also known as the Air Tigers. The attacks carried out by two Z-143 aircrafts were launched kamikaze style and intended to be similar to the September 11 attacks. It was estimated that there were 215 kg of C-4 plastic explosives inside each plane rather than bombs which they have previously done. However, the raid which was carried out in the night was unsuccessful detected by the Sri Lanka Air Force and the planes were shot down by anti-aircraft gunfire before the planes reached their targets. One of the planes, crashed into a 15 floor building.A military statement said "parts of strewn pieces of flesh said to be that of the Tiger pilot" were found inside the building. The engine of the plane was found on the 12th floor of the building. The other plane also was shot down after it decided to return to base.On the ground in total, two people died and over fifty were injured as a result of the attacks.

In general, the LTTE carries out its attacks through three subdivisions, namely, the black tigers, the sea tigers and the air tigers.

The black tigers carry out mainly suicide bombing attacks. One of its most famous attacks include the assasination of former prime minister of India Rajvi Gandhi. The profile of any recruit into the black tigers needs to be considered before they are accepted into it. Some of these factors include whether they have decendants and their family situations.

The sea tigers carry out mainly naval attacks and they also facilitate the movement of troops and resources.

The air tigers carry out air raids and attacks. It is the only rebel organisation which has an air wing. One of its most famous attacks include the suicide air raid on colombo, as discussed above.

  1. I think you can research and include on how this group is maintained, and do they do anything to prevent themselves from getting caught by the police squad? As in do they get their own members to marry their own members so as to prevent any leak of information from the group.

  3. Hey. Interesting post, especially the part on the sub-divisions of the tigers.

    They really assasinated India's PM?
I went to find out more about the assasiantion.
Apparently, it was carried out by a female member of the LTTE because they were not happy with India's peace-keeping efforts.

That really links up to their motives.

    Just two curious questions:
    1. Has the government of SL tried to stop the air tigers, since it's the only rebel group with an air wing?

    2. Does this mean that they are becoming stronger as a force, or are other factors weakening them?

  7. This blog allows me to access to a wide variety of information on Tamil Tigers, which essentially expand my knowledge about this particular terrorist group, but i think more details should be up. I like the video that is posted and I personally feel that there should be more pictures uploaded to allow netsters to have a deeper understanding of the Tamil Tigers. Although you guys have mentioned that you were neutral about the stand, however no reasons are used to support you perspective. The Tamil tigers have done so many bad things to harm the community, why aren’t you guys against them? Keep up the goodJOB(:
