SOCIAL & POLITICAL IMPACT

Social Impact On the Bali

Bali bombings had made the potential of having social tensions. Many people had mistaken that the bombing was done by the religion, Islam. This results in Islam being look down on and feared by many other religions. In order to change the perceptions of the people, the locals in Bali signified that this tragedy was not about religion. For example, they had peaceful prayers. The local government worries that they will be an increase in the social tension which can result in conflicts. This is because of the growing economic hardships. Keeping social tensions in checking and maintaining law and order are key aspect on Bali recovery.

Political impact on Bali

Government has step up security level in Bali. They have implemented strict laws and punishments to people who involved in terrorist activities. Government also had to tighten various controls such as stepping up border security so as not to allow terrorists to enter to the country easily. Hence, the people will not feel comfortable as they do not have freedom. However, this is a need in order to prevent further attacks and bombings in Bali.

Economic Impact of the Bali Bombings

The most obvious effect is the damage to TOURISM on the island of Bali.Bali accounts for about 40 per cent of Indonesia's earnings from tourism. Tourism revenue ranks alongside clothing, textiles and petroleum products as the biggest sources of foreign income for Indonesia. The violence affecting the rest of the country could make rebuilding the industry a very difficult process.

But apart from the immediate effect on the tourism industry, the Bali explosions are likely to add to Indonesia's already serious problems with lack of foreign investment.Without new investment, sustained growth will be impossible, especially since five years of no investment in infrastructure such as power generation has left the economy with emerging structural weaknesses. Regular power failures are beginning to occur across the key island of Java.

Therefore..
Investors have been reluctant to commit to Indonesia because of perceived political instability and poor economic prospects, as well as problems with corruption in the bureaucracy and the legal and judicial system that make doing business costly and risky.

Attacks by the Tamil Tigers

There were various attacks carried out by the Tamil tigers in its aim to have an independent Tamil state and here are some of the significant attacks:

Suicide air raid on Colombo on 20 February 2009

This suicide air raid was launched by the LTTE air-wing also known as the Air Tigers. The attacks carried out by two Z-143 aircrafts were launched kamikaze style and intended to be similar to the September 11 attacks. It was estimated that there were 215 kg of C-4 plastic explosives inside each plane rather than bombs which they have previously done. However, the raid which was carried out in the night was unsuccessful detected by the Sri Lanka Air Force and the planes were shot down by anti-aircraft gunfire before the planes reached their targets. One of the planes, crashed into a 15 floor building.A military statement said "parts of strewn pieces of flesh said to be that of the Tiger pilot" were found inside the building. The engine of the plane was found on the 12th floor of the building. The other plane also was shot down after it decided to return to base.On the ground in total, two people died and over fifty were injured as a result of the attacks.

In general, the LTTE carries out its attacks through three subdivisions, namely, the black tigers, the sea tigers and the air tigers.

The black tigers carry out mainly suicide bombing attacks. One of its most famous attacks include the assasination of former prime minister of India Rajvi Gandhi. The profile of any recruit into the black tigers needs to be considered before they are accepted into it. Some of these factors include whether they have decendants and their family situations.

The sea tigers carry out mainly naval attacks and they also facilitate the movement of troops and resources.

The air tigers carry out air raids and attacks. It is the only rebel organisation which has an air wing. One of its most famous attacks include the suicide air raid on colombo, as discussed above.

Origins and Motives

The Liberation Tamil Tiger Eelam(LTTE) is founded by Velupillai Prabhakaran in 1976. LTTE is a militant organisation in Sri Lanka, which influenced many supporters amongst the youth. Seen as a terrorist group by at least 30 countries around the world, The Tigers have taken control of the territory in north-east Sri Lanka and in the process, battle against the Sri Lankan Army. They even recruited child soldiers and woman for suicide attacks. Surprisingly, it has carried out more suicide bombings than other terrorists groups such as Hamas and Al-Qaeda. They have been involved in peace talks to end the conflict but to no avail.

In April 1984, the LTTE formed a bigger and common militant front with other groups such as the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO). However, later on in 1986, the LTTE denounced a view of TELO on India and they broke. Fighting broke out between both organisations and most of the TELO members were wiped out. The LTTE assaulted training camps and conquered the Jaffna Peninsula.
The motive of the Tigers is to have a separate state between the Tamil state in the north and east of Sri Lanka. The Tigers were dissatisfied with policies by governments to solve problems posed by the nation's Tamil society. The Tamils were not given equal rights as the Sinhalese for example, basic citizenship rights. Hence, they wanted independance.
